Mobile Audio Video: Legislation Encourages Safer Driving Through

Von postrepleto am 16. Februar 2012. Abgelegt in Allgemein

Beginning in January 2012, commercial drivers are prohibited from use of hand-held cellphones and new requirements are going into place concerning texting while driving ? and new vehicle technology is actually helping all drivers to drive more safely.

A joint rule from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is the latest action endorsed by the U.S. Department of Transportation that aims to end distracted driving. This federal ban on cell phone took effect January 3, 2012. Legislators from many states are trying to get these laws extended to all drivers in all states.

In recent months major truck and bus companies, such as Greyhound, Wal-Mart, UPS, Conoco-Phillips and others, have changed their policies to ban their drivers from using hand-held cell phones, to make and receive phone calls, or for texting. In other words, talk or text on a cellphone while driving and you could lose your job.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) research in 2009 more than 5,400 people died and a half a million were injured in crashes involving a distracted driver. The NHTSA also noted that distraction-related fatalities represented 16 percent of the overall traffic fatalities in 2009.

In the past few years, most automobile companies have been developing in-vehicle technology so they can offer Bluetooth hands-free in-vehicle communications. The whole idea is to keep the driver?s eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. Although an option for most vehicles, more and more drivers are demanding it from their vehicles.

Ford Motor Company goes further by having an app (911 Assist) that assists emergency personnel. Their hands-free infotainment system, called Sync, was co-developed with help from Microsoft. With Sync, if the ?paired? phone is on and active and the vehicle is involved an accident that triggers the airbags, then it automatically makes the system dial the closest 911 dispatcher. It relays the latitude, longitude and altitude plus it opens the microphone so the dispatcher can speak with occupants of the car.

Depending on the cellphone, some users of Ford?s Sync system can also have their text messages, interpreted and read back to them by the system. With the Sync system, a driver can receive and even send back text messages via voice (albeit a short list of canned messages). Ford and Microsoft use the MAP protocol with SMS messaging. Some Android based phones and some Blackberry phones can send and receive text messages through the Sync system. This allows drivers to stay more focused on the road. Currently Apple engineers are not complying with this protocol and so Apple iPhone users cannot use the text-to-voice functions (unless they are using the new iPhone 4s with Siri). Siri, a voice-operated assistant, can be accessed through Sync and she will find and read text messages and play tehm back through the vehicle?s sound system.

As more vehicle manufacturers expand the Bluetooth capabilities of their vehicles, then more and more drivers will have the opportunity to avoid using their handheld cellphones while driving. Hopefully this ban will reduce the number of fatalities from distracted drivers.

In fact, the automotive insurance industry is already listing ten safety features they think all new car buyers should be looking for in their next vehicle. The list includes:

Intelligent Cruise Control ? This helps your vehicle maintain a safe distance from cars ahead of it.

Lane Drifting Warning ? This helps drivers who have inadvertently drifted out of their lane and could be going into another lane or going off the road. The constant monitoring keeps drivers on their toes.

Tire Pressure Monitoring ? This is now required by the NHTSA on all vehicles built since 2008. Helps alert drivers if a tire is over- or under-inflated.

Rear View Cameras ? When the car?s transmission is placed in reverse it automatically displays a view on a monitor to let the driver see what?s behind them.

Blind Spot Detection ? Sensors at the rear of the vehicle alert the driver so they can safely make lane changes.

Adaptive Headlights ? These do more than ordinary headlights to make it easier for drivers to see what?s ahead or around the corner.

Intelligent Airbag Sensors ? Using spontaneous sensors, the vehicle determine which airbags need to be fired and at what speed to keep drivers safe in a collision.

Emergency Response Systems ? In addition to calling 911 for assistance, this system shuts of the fuel delivery system, disconnects the battery from the alternator, turns on interior lights and unlocks the doors.

Rollover Prevention ? Complicated sensors detect a rollover in progress and fire off appropriate airbags and other defenses to keep occupants safe.

Night Vision Assistance ? Vehicle equipped with this have infrared sensors that can look further ahead on the road to detect people or animals that might be difficult to see.

So safe driving can be enhanced with increased driver awareness, safer roads, tougher traffic laws and vehicles built with better technology.

Discovering the Secrets of Long-Term Love

Mind Matters | Mind & Brain

A survey reveals many American couples are still "intensely in love" even after a decade together--and hints at the reasons why

What makes passion endure? Image: iStock/Jacob Wackerhausen

During America's most popular TV event, the Superbowl, one much-anticipated advertisement featuring supermodel Adriana Lima painted a pretty sad state of affairs with regards to love.

In an ad for Kia cars, a married couple sleeps side by side and we are given a glimpse into their dreams. While the woman dreams of being swept away by a long-haired hunk on a horse, her husband is speeding down a racetrack in a car while Lima and a horde of bikini-clad women cheer him on. Although the dream eventually ends with the couple meeting exchanging weak smiles and going for a drive in the Kia (this is family television after all), the peak moments are clearly the fantasies. The deadened couple compensates for lack of love with wild dreams and a Kia car purchase.

Is this the inevitable end point of a long-term relationship?

Think again! A recent study by Daniel O?Leary and colleagues at Stony Brook University suggests that a large percentage of couples stay intensely in love even after a decade of marriage. The findings may also reveal the secrets to keeping intense love alive.

O?Leary and his team surveyed a nationally representative sample of 274 couples married ten years or more on the state of their love life. When they first collected the data, the researchers were dumbfounded by the large percentage of people who claimed to still be intensely in love.?The couples answered the question "how in love are you with your partner?" on a scale of 1 to 7 from "not at all in love" to "very intensely in love." To the researchers? surprise, the most frequent response was "very intensely in love" for both men and women. Forty six percent of women and 49 percent of men reported being "very intensely in love," according to the report, which was?published in this month?s Journal of Social Psychological and Personality Science.

What are the secrets of intense love over the long term? Not surprisingly, the list was topped by physically affectionate behaviors such as hugging and kissing. The survey couldn?t determine cause and effect, but oxytocin, sometimes called the ?cuddle hormone,? goes coursing through our bodies when we receive hugs or make love. We then feel closer to our partner and long-term bonding ensues. Decades of psychological research shows that social connection is a fundamental human need and essential for our physical and mental well-being. Affection is such an important element of love that the couples in the study who did not report any physical affection also reported a loveless relationship.

The researchers found that frequency of sex was also strongly associated with intensity in love, but that, interestingly, it was not always a requirement: 25 percent of those who had not had sex in the last month still reported being intensely in love.

Physical affection is so powerful that, even if a relationship doesn't always seem perfect (and what relationship always does?), it may help make up for the negatives.?Certain couples, for example, reported low marital satisfaction due, presumably, to some of the common challenges couples face (e.g. differences in parenting styles, financial stress, divisions of responsibility). However, if their levels of physical affection remained high, the couple still reported intense love.

Thinking positively about one?s partner is another common element of couples intensely in love, according to the findings. When people see each other every day, they can sometimes take each other for granted and stop noticing the characteristics they used to appreciate about their mate. However, a little awareness and gratitude may go a long way in countering this tendency. When we get to know someone well, we naturally learn about both their strengths and their weaknesses but it is really up to us whether we choose to focus one side or the other. By focusing on what we appreciate and admire in our partner and being grateful for the value and gifts that our partner brings into our lives, we cannot but think positively and may feel more intense love as a consequence.

Summit opens on kingdom's insurance boom ...

Huge growth potential seen in Saudi Arabia?s newly liberalised market.

Saudi Arabia?s newly liberalised insurance market comes under the spotlight this week with estimates that a market currently worth around $1.5 billion annually could soar to $8 billion within 10 years.

An elite speaker faculty of key international and regional professionals will be taking part in the 2nd Saudi Insurance Summit at the Jeddah Hilton Hotel 29-30 October 2007. The Summit, taking place with the approval of the Governor of Jeddah Prince Mishaal bin Majed bin Abdulaziz, is expected to be attended by more than 300 insurance professionals, regulators and key industry players.

The Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency recently reported the insurance market grew 35% in 2006 alone. Gross premiums rose to $1.8 billion from $1.3 billion in 2005. General insurance premiums, which represented 65% of the insurance market, increased by 25% to $1.2 billion in 2006 compared with $959 million in the previous year.

Protection and savings insurance premiums, which represented a mere 3% of the insurance market, went up by almost 16% to $59 million in 2006 compared with $51 million in 2005.

But it is health insurance that is attracting the most attention ? representing 32% of the insurance market ? and saw premiums increased by 57% to $589 million in 2006 compared with $375 million in 2005. This growth is mainly driven by the decision to make health insurance mandatory for all expatriate workers as well as favourable economic conditions.

New laws require the kingdom?s seven million expatriates to prove that health insurance cover is provided to them by their employers. The first phase demanded compliance from companies with over 500 employees by July this year. Remaining companies have until March 2008 to ensure their workers are covered.

The opening up of Saudi Arabia?s insurance sectors has injected hundreds of millions of dollars into the market with more to come through new company licensing and public offerings.

All insurance companies operating in the Saudi market must obtain a license by March 2008 or cease operations. The capital requirements for gaining a license are $26.67 million for insurers and $53.33 million for reinsurers with an additional 10% statutory deposit. Companies are also obliged to float at least 25% of their shares on the Tadawul and meet other regulatory requirements before receiving a licence.

At present, 18 companies have been licensed, with 24 more expecting to be granted approval.

?The new laws have led many in the industry to forecast excellent growth in the non-life sector in Saudi Arabia with predictions of $4 billion growth by 2009 being touted,? said Deep Marwaha, Senior Conference Manager, of IIR Middle East, organisers of the 2nd Saudi Insurance Summit

?Within this high growth market, the landscape is shifting dramatically,? said Marwaha. ?The 2nd Saudi Insurance Summit aims to ensure that key players keep abreast of new developments in what is a breakneck business environment.?

In addition to the two-day Summit, there are two practical workshops. The first is on the principles of Islamic insurance ? Takaful structures and Shari?ah compliance, conducted by Rodney Wilson, Director of Postgraduate Studies and Professor of Economics at the University of Durham?s School of Government and International Affairs, UK.

A post Summit workshop ? Mind the Gap! How Can We Bridge the Insurance Skill Shortage? ? will be led by Ian Wilson, Head of Insurance Programmes at the Institute of Banking, Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency.

Among more than 30 leading international and regional speakers taking part in the Summit will be Dr Muhammad Al Jasser, Vice Governor of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency; Ali Al Subaihin, CEO of the Company for Co-operative Insurance (NCCI); Brad Bourland, Chief Economist of Jadwa Investment Company, Saudi Arabia; Tal Hisham Nazer, Managing Director BUPA Middle East; and Dawood Taylor, Group Head, Takaful Ta?awuni, Bank Aljazira, Saudi Arabia.

NCCI are diamond sponsors of the Summit; Medgulf and Bank Aljazira are platinum sponsors; Takaful Re is a gold sponsor; and Salama Co-operative Insurance Company and HiQSys Saudi are silver sponsors.

Anast's World: Hamster & Exotic Pet Carry Deadly Germs....

By Mail Foreign Service

Last updated at 3:15 PM on 6th October 2008

Parents have been warned not to buy their young children hamsters or other exotic animals as pets for fear they carry dangerous and potentially deadly germs.

That's according to a leading U.S. pediatricians' group in a report about dangers from exotic animals.
Exotic pets may also be more prone than cats and dogs to bite, scratch or claw - putting children younger than five particularly at risk, the report says.

Young children are vulnerable to germs such as salmonella because their immune systems are still developing - plus they often put their hands in their mouths.

They may look harmless but hamster can carry germs which could potentially be fatal for youngsters, American paediatricians warn

They may look harmless but hamster can carry germs which could potentially be fatal for youngsters, American paediatricians warn

That means families with children younger than five should avoid owning "non-traditional" pets - and should even avoid contact with them in petting zoos or other public places, according to the report from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The report appears in the October edition of the group's medical journal, Pediatrics.
"Many parents clearly don't understand the risks from various infections" these animals often carry, said Dr. Larry Pickering, the report's lead author and an infectious disease specialist at the federal Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

For example, about 11 per cent of salmonella illnesses in children are thought to stem from contact with lizards, turtles and other reptiles, Pickering said.

Hamsters and baby chicks also can carry this germ, which can cause severe diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps.

Young children can get it by kissing or touching the animals and then putting their hands in their mouths, he said.

A child was recently hospitalised after playing with his family's pet iguana (file photo), the report's researchers said

A child was recently hospitalised after playing with his family's pet iguana (file photo), the report's researchers said

Study co-author Dr. Joseph Bocchini said he recently treated an infant who got salmonella from the family's pet iguana, which was allowed to roam freely in the home.

The child was hospitalised for four weeks but has recovered, said Bocchini, head of the academy's infectious diseases committee and pediatrics chairman at Louisiana State University in Shreveport.

Hedgehogs can be dangerous because their quills can penetrate skin and have been known to spread a bacteria germ that can cause fever, stomach pain and a rash, the report said.

But Bocchini added with supervision and precautions like hand-washing, contact between children and animals 'is a good thing'.

However, families should wait until children are older before bringing home an exotic pet, he said.
Those who already have these pets should contact their veterinarians about specific risks and possible new homes for the animals, he said.

Data cited in the study indicate that about 4million U.S. households have pet reptiles.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, all kinds of exotic pets are on the rise, although generally fewer than 2 per cent of households own them.

The veterinarian group's Mike Dutton, an exotic animal specialist, said the recommendations send an important message to parents who sometimes buy exotic pets on an impulse "then they ask questions, sometimes many months later."

But a spokesman for the International Hedgehog Association said there's no reason to single out hedgehogs or other exotic pets.

"Our recommendation is that no animal should be a pet for kids five and under," he said.
