Ready SIM

Need a burner? I won't judge. Maybe you want to hand out a semi-bogus number to intriguing guys at nightclubs. Maybe you're just in the U.S. for a few days, visiting. Ready SIM cards from Roam Mobility feed your need for disposable mobile phone numbers with a quick and easy, grab-and-go solution that works with any unlocked handset.

Plans and Setup
Ready SIM offers seven different plans. Unlimited talk and text SIMs with no data support run $15 for 3 days, $20 for a week, $25 for two weeks, or $40 for 30 days. With data, you'll pay $25 for a week with 500MB, $35 for two weeks with 1GB, and $55 for 30 days with 2GB. Prices are competitive with other operators.

When I say grab and go, I mean it: Ready SIM doesn't require any ID, subscription, signup, email address, or other form of contact. You don't have to talk to anyone to set it up. It's completely anonymous and self-activating, as far as the law provides. And when your time is up, well, you just dispose of the card.?

Right now, Ready SIM comes only in the standard SIM size. Convertible standard/MicroSIMs will be available in March, with iPhone 5-compatible nanoSIMs coming in April.

I used Ready SIM in a range of feature phones and Android-powered smartphones. Setup was easy: Pop in the SIM, text a ZIP code to 7850, and get back a local phone number for that ZIP code. Trying two SIMs, I got a 415 number for the 94101 zip code and a 646 number for 10010. I got a text with my phone number and the SIM's expiration date, and I was on my way.

With data plans, there's one extra step: You need to create a new APN called "roam" and save it. That was easy enough to do in the networking settings of my Android phones.

There's no account management at all, and no cash balance on the SIM. All plans offer unlimited talk in the U.S., both domestic and international text, and voice mail. You can't make international calls, although you can receive them. Things get a little tricky with the data plans, as Roam doesn't give you a way to monitor your data usage. If you have an Android phone, I'd suggest immediately downloading the Onavo Count app, which keeps track of your data usage. In April, the company says it will start sending customers an SMS warning when they're down to 10 percent of their allotted data. If you run out of data, you can't add more; you just have to get another SIM.

SIMs can't be renewed, either, at least for now. Roam says that in March you'll be able to extend SIMs with top-up cards within 72 hours of their expiration time. If you like your number, you can port it out to another, longer-term provider.

Network and Phones
Ready SIM uses T-Mobile's nationwide HSPA+ 42 network. For international travelers, that can be a bit of a downer. While T-Mobile is busily converting its 3G network onto the internationally compatible 1900MHz band, most of T-Mobile's 3G network is still on the AWS band. That means in most of the country, international-spec phones will be stuck on the slower 2G EDGE system, getting Internet speeds of about 100-120kbps. If you can find a T-Mobile-compatible phone, speeds will be dramatically higher,?as much as 6-8Mbps down.

Ready SIM doesn't offer any phones itself, relying on independent dealers. One of them, Social Mobile, sells phone-and-SIM packs through readysimgo.com, but the phones are overpriced. Frankly, you're better picking up the cheapest possible GSM phone on Amazon or eBay. Decent phones with QWERTY keyboards from major manufacturers like Samsung and Huawei should start around $40.

If you're looking for inexpensive smartphones for this service, Amazon has the motherlode. Consider the $99.99 Huawei U8150, the $164.99 HTC G2 Vision, or a whole bunch of BlackBerrys, for instance. Ready SIM will also work with any T-Mobile phone.

Terms, Privacy, and Conclusions
For better or for worse, Ready SIM's privacy is bound by U.S. law. That means Roam Mobility has to keep records of every call made to or from a Ready SIM for seven years after a SIM is deactivated, and has to hand those over to law enforcement with a court order. If you buy your Ready SIM with cash over the counter, though, Roam has no idea who you are, and can't connect your call details with your identity.

Internet traffic is safer. All Ready SIM data goes through a private APN which routes traffic through a proxy server, so it looks like all Web requests are just going to the proxy server. Presumably, a court could subpoena the proxy server, but once again, if you buy your Ready SIM with cash, Roam doesn't know who you are.

Ready SIM is a unique product: a short-term SIM with a real focus on privacy. Since it's time-limited, it's best used for a specific trip, task, or project. If you're looking for longer-term GSM prepaid service, check out our roundup of the?Best Prepaid SIM Cards. The service clearly still has some growing to do?we'd like to see those MicroSIMs, as well as some way to top up data allowances. But in its focus on privacy, Ready SIM is unique.

How to Choose the Right Graduate Career in ... - Training tampa

Today, the knowledge economy has created a great demand for university education. Those who are interested in getting ahead are taking university education very seriously. As people get this higher education, the job market gets flooded with competent human resource and the competition for employment becomes stiff. As a university leaver, you need to research on how to choose the right graduate career in accordance to your degree. It is only after this determination that one can be able to fight of competition and land a job that is both paying and satisfying.

A graduate degree in Psychology for instance predisposes one to a variety of options in the job market. The market has many options but before one determines the right one for themselves it is necessary to first determine the areas of psychology that interest him/her additionally, let one also determine whether they are interested in advanced learning. Once one has made this determination, it is easy to pick from one of the employment areas: mental health, business and education. In mental health, one can become a counselor or a psychiatrist. In the field of education, one can become an educational psychologist or a school psychologist. These professionals will give advice on matters of behavior and teaching psychology.

How to choose the right graduate career in accordance to your degree is also a difficulty for young lawyers fresh from university. Upon determination of the area of interest one is inclined towards, it is possible to pick from the many options available to law graduates. When one has successfully gone through law school and graduated with honors, he/she will have an area of the law that he/she majored in during the study. If for instance one majored in health law, he/she will have to determine which areas of health law appeals more. There is the administrative, litigation and transactional areas of health law. If one is good in face-to-face arguments in court then he/she can go for the litigation part of health law. If one does not prefer this, then there is the option of administrative law.

As a graduate with biology major, there are many opportunities. Again, this determination has to be based on the passion one feels for a certain field. A student who has cleared university with biology major can become a teacher after doing a short course in education. The question now becomes whether he/she is ready to study more. A biology major can also get one a job in administration where one plans food programs and drug testing programs. The graduate can as well get a job managing a botanical garden.

In the field of education, an alumna has to determine whether he/she is interested in scholarly work or just in teaching and administration. The individual who prefers scholarly work will not opt for a master?s in education since this degree is terminal meaning that it does not go on to PhD. However, a graduate who is interested in administration in education will pick this degree as it enhances his/her chances of getting a better job. A graduate who wishes to change careers say from sociology to education can take a masters of arts in teaching- MAT. This degree is terminal and does not require one to write a thesis therefore the transition is swift.

Students who get a business administration degree from university have a wide range of options that they can pick from in terms of employment. The determination of the career path that one wants should not be driven entirely by the rewards, but to a large extent the individual?s talent and liking. As a graduate in business administration, an individual can opt to work as an underwriter, a management trainee or even a business consultant. The individual who excelled in business law will find employment as an underwriter more rewarding.

A considerable percentage of alumnae from university are inclined to pick a certain career based entirely on the reward. This decision is not wise since it is driven by extrinsic motivators which if relinquished would leave one at odds with the employer. How to choose the right graduate career in accordance to your degree is more of a challenge than many will acknowledge. With the above insights, one will find that the choice made reflects on one?s talent and future plans and to some extent the reward hence satisfying.

I'm writing a book about my life ? Julius Agwu

By OPEOLUWANI OGUNJIMI

With arms confidently placed on his desk, right inside his Surulere office, popular Comedian, Julius Agwu, who is one of the most successful comic acts in the country, recounts his life, forty years down the line.

He also spoke about his plan to celebrate his fortieth birthday, his book, new single, new TV show and family.

Excerpts:

This is a new year, what have you been up to?

This is a new year, 2013. For me, it?s two thousand and re-starting because this year, I?m going to be forty and it?s a new start for me. I was talking with the Deputy Governor of Cross River State and he said; forty is the old age of youth and it?s also the youth of old age.

We got talking about my fortieth and he was advising me and told me it?s worth celebrating. I was also speaking with Alex Oti, the Group Director of? Diamond Bank and he said; all the foolish things I do should end in March before my fortieth in April, because a fool at forty is a fool forever. This year also, I?m writing a book? about my journey so far.

What?s the title of the book?

I don?t want to reveal the title for now for fear of? Nollywood so they won?t name a movie after it.? But we are working on it and it?s being? edited by Tony Kan. The whole idea of it is that this is a fresh beginning for me and I call it 20-restarting, a year I want to re- strategize and re-position. As a matter of fact, I?m doing a song now and it?s titled Rejuvenate. So I want to rejuvenate the brand and myself.

So what are those things you used to do that you are going to stop doing @ 40?

Although I know them, I don?t want to reveal them because they are personal things.

Are you planning to celebrate your fortieth?

Of course I plan celebrating it. I want to use that medium to appreciate those who have helped me this far- my friends, brothers and sisters and everybody, especially God. It?s not? that I?m rich but I?m wealthy. I have a wealth of experience.

Julius Agwu and wife

Julius Agwu and wife

So what are those things lined up for that day?

I already mentioned that my book will be launched, which is the major thing. And there will be other performances by friends and colleagues.

I?m sure you plan celebrating it big. So are there any persons or corporate groups supporting you?

Nobody is supporting me yet with anything and it?s strictly by invitation.

So why did you decide to write a book?

Like I said, it?s about my journey so far, where I?m coming from, challenges and obstacles and the wheel of progress; where I am today. Like it or not, we are not Lagosians. There are people who come to Lagos with nylon bags and go back with briefcases, and others come with briefcases and go back with nylon bags.

But God has been very very nice to me. My career is such that they say entertainers? life span is never long but the grace of God has brought me this far and I feel there?s a cause for celebration. I also want to celebrate my fans. Co incidentally, my fortieth falls on a Sunday. So part of it is that we?ll go to church in the morning, and then in the evening, we celebrate.

Aside that, I?ll also be launching my new TV show titled Jokes Apart.

For how long has it been in the pipeline?

For five years now. And that?s because TV production isn?t easy, so we have to put in our best. Aside from that, it?s something we want to concentrate on so we don?t get distracted by other things.

What are the side attraction that Jokes Apart will bring to viewers?

Let them just look out for the show when it starts and later, they can now judge our performances. We know we may make our mistakes but we hope to get it right from the start. For it to have been in the pipeline for five years, reason is the fear of failure? and this is my greatest fear. So I believe God to give me wisdom to make it a success.

So have you finished shooting?

We haven?t but we?ve already set up a studio. So, we?re waiting for the technical crew before we start shooting. It will unveil in April.

Are you going to have a live audience like Teju Babyface?

No, there won?t be a live audience. It?s studio based.

Do you have sponsors yet?

That?s one of the major challenges we have. At the moment, there?s no sponsor yet. But then we thank God that some of us have been able to sustain our brands.

What about the Abuja Festival Of Love?

Yes, it?s something I started two years ago in Abuja. Over the year, I?ve always spent Valentine and my birthdays with the less privilege because I see it as my own corporate social responsibility. So last two years, 2011, I decided that I wanted to start something about showing love to people who lack love.

That was why I started it but it was when the bombing issue was the order of the day in Abuja. So we did the? first edition in Abuja, the second was held in Lagos because of the unrest in Abuja. We actually got threats not to hold the event there and then, the Abuja people were too scared to gather.

So this year, I don?t want to hold it in Lagos because there are so many events already holding here, that?s why we are taking it back to Abuja. So for all our events, Aero Contractors has been very supportive, they are our official carrier, even on this event. So it?s a classic event for lovers. There will be couple?s games, karaoke games and part of the proceeds will be given back to charity.

Why is it that your shows don?t always have sponsors?

Okay, for this particular one, Festival of Love, it?s powered by OsmoServe Global, owned by a friend of mine called Scot Tommy, he just promised to do so but he hasn?t given anything yet but I?m hoping he?ll sponsor it. I?m also saying thank you to my colleagues who have decided to be part of it. I can?t pay them what they are worth but then, I pay them. As a matter of fact, I started paying a token of appreciation to my colleagues right from when we started Crack Ya Ribs as far back of 2001.

For music, we have Wizkid, Bunner Boy and Chidnma. For comedy, we have Bovi, Apororo, Daniel, based in Port-Harcourt, Chugo, and others. There?s going to be? a red carpet by 5pm and then cocktail.

Being into entertainment isn?t all about money but passion, and that?s why I don?t mind funding my shows alone. My joy is that what I do give me satisfaction.

Aside organizing your own shows, do you still accept invites to perform on other colleagues? shows?

Yes I do. I also encourage other up-comers to participate.

Like? who and who are the up-comers you are supporting at the moment?

There are quite many. We have Daniel ?D? Humorous based in Port-Harcourt, Senator based in Jos, Fony Bone, Osama, all these people I?ve taken to London and America; they?ve been around the world courtesy of the platform I provide.

So how does it? feel to be 40 because you don?t look it?

Like I said, I was dancing Azonto and my wife said I shouldn?t be dancing to such at my age. So I told her that even at 80, I?ll still be dancing to songs in vogue. Age is a function of the mind.

How to Recover Data When Your Hard Drive Goes Belly Up

How to Recover Data When Your Hard Drive Goes Belly UpImagine this: you're busy working on your computer and need to access documents saved on your external hard drive. You connect it, get ready to find your data, and...nothing happens. Your hard drive isn't working. Uh oh. Before you panic, there are several things you can try on your own before calling in the pros.

Data loss can be due to a number of factors, but two are the most common. The first (and easiest to resolve) is software related. You've accidentally deleted an important folder and emptied the recycle bin, or gone and formatted the wrong drive by mistake. The second?and probably most common?cause of data loss is a fault with the hard drive itself. Given the complexity of modern drives it's no wonder that somewhere along the line something will go wrong. When the drive suffers from some form of failure there's often little that you can do yourself to get the data back?professional data recovery services are usually required. However, there are certain failures that you can attempt to resolve yourself.

Recover Your Data with Software

When dealing with a software data loss, the first and most important thing to keep in mind is not to work with the drive in question. Every second that the drive is connected to a running system is a second that you lose your chances at recovery. Your operating system is reading and writing to your drive constantly, whether you're actively doing something or not. Now that your system is seeing the deleted data as ?free space' it will happily overwrite this area?along with your chances of recovery.

  1. Shutdown the machine connected to the drive you've deleted data from. Now that your drive is ?safe' you can make a clone of the drive and attempt the recovery from the clone. There are a number of ways to clone the drive, some easier and quicker than others.
  2. Scan the clone with a few different recovery programs. There are numerous options here, both free and paid-for packages are available. Recuva is a good free option, while Zero Assumption Recovery works well if you want to splash out a few dollars.

How to Recover Data When Your Hard Drive Goes Belly Up

Pictured: The basic components of a hard drive with top cover off and PCB removed.

Recover Your Data with Hardware

Having covered the ?deleted data' section of data recovery is all good and well, but what happens if your drive is not even being detected by your machine? Or your machine can see the drive, but just hangs when you try to access it? What about if the drive is completely dead and won't even spin up? Let's briefly cover the main components of a drive, see which components can fail, and what symptoms each failure might exhibit.

PCB: This is the (often green) circuit board attached to the bottom of your drive. It houses the main controller (the equivalent of your computer's CPU) along with many other electronic controllers. This is the interface that turns your 0s and 1s from the platter into usable data that your computer can understand.

Platters: Your drive contains one or more thin, circular platters. These spin around at anywhere between 5,900rpm to 7,200rpm on consumer drives and are the media that actually store your data. Made of glass or some form of alloy and coated with a magnetic layer, they can store anything up to 4TB of data.

Head assembly: Data from your drives' platters is read by means of a series of read and write heads. While in operation, these heads are not actually in contact with the surface of the platters. In fact, they ?fly' nanometers above the surface of the disk, reading and writing data. Typically a drive will have 2 heads per platter, so a large capacity drive with 3 platters will be paired up with 6 heads, one for each side of each platter. If these heads fail physically or the drive is dropped or knocked over, the drive can experience a ?head crash' where the heads no longer fly over the platters, but instead make contact with the surface and destroy your data at a few thousand revolutions per minute.

Firmware: Your drive runs its own mini operating system in order to deal with all of the data and operations required to access it. Most of this firmware is stored on the platters. A small portion is stored on the PCB, which is required when the drive starts up. Firmware can go wrong, leading to inaccessibility of your data. Unfortunately hard drive firmware is not similar to your mobile phone or tablet?you cannot just update or reflash it. Each drive has its own unique modules and parameters and is highly complex in nature.

Now that we understand the basic components of a hard drive let's look at some common failures and symptoms you might experience, determine which component could be causing the problem, and see if we can tackle some of these problems DIY style.

If Your Drive Isn't Spinning Up At All

This is the one instance where you have a relatively good chance of resurrecting your drive if you're prepared to put in some time and effort. If the drive does absolutely nothing when you apply power to it (no noises at all), it is 99% a PCB problem. With older drives, you could sometimes find a matching PCB from another matching drive, swap it over, and voila. However, on new drives, technology and architecture have changed and each drive contains microcode unique to the drive it's attached to. Simply swapping the PCB with a matching, working equivalent has almost no chance of working and can be outright dangerous to your data.

There are two main causes of failure here, either a TVS diode (fuse) has shorted due to overvoltage, or a vital component on the PCB has failed. Hard drive PCBs often have two TVS diodes which act as fuses to protect your drive in the event of a power spike. There will most likely be two of these: one for the 5v and one for the 12v rail. If you accidentally plugged in the wrong power adapter to your external drive, or you experienced a power surge, a TVS diode might have sacrificed itself. If the shorted TVS diode is the only casualty and the rest of the PCB components are OK, then simply removing the shorted diode is enough to bring the drive back to life.

You can test this with a multimeter?if the diode reads zero ohms, or close to it, then it has indeed shortened. When shorted these diodes often have a noticeable burnt smell and might have visible burn damage. Note that when a TVS diode is removed the drive is no longer protected, so ensure that the power supply you connect to the drive is correct and healthy.

How to Recover Data When Your Hard Drive Goes Belly Up

Pictured: A PCB with the TVS diodes highlighted

If the TVS diodes don't smell burnt and show the correct digits when measuring them, then the problem is the PCB itself. A replacement PCB is required, but not just a straight swap. There is an 8 pin ROM chip on most PCBs that contains unique firmware info that is required to start up the drive. This needs to be moved from the old PCB to the new in order for the replacement to work. Some hard drives, especially Western Digitals, do not have this 8 pin chip?the firmware is stored in the main controller which is virtually impossible to move.

If you want to replace the PCB then you'll need to fine a matching replacement and have the ROM chip moved. There are many online providers that will sell you a matching PCB. Some of them even offer to move the ROM chip for you, saving you the hassle of soldering and possibly damaging the chip. If the PCB was the only damaged component and the drive's internals are OK, then after the replacement and ROM swap, your drive should be up and running again. Another PCB-related item to check are the head contacts. Sometimes they corrode with time, but are easily cleaned with a rubber eraser.

How to Recover Data When Your Hard Drive Goes Belly Up

Pictured: The contacts on a PCB can cause problems when they become tarnished like this.

If Your Drive Is Spinning Up and Making Clicking Noises

This is a serious failure and indicates a failed head or heads. It could also mean that your drive has suffered from platter damage if a head crash has occurred. Either way, this is a job for the pros. The drive will need to be opened in a clean room environment in a lab and a replacement head assembly fitted in order to try and recover your data. If your drive is clicking, it's best power it off and leave it in this state until you can send it to a professional recovery company. Powering it up in this state could degrade the disk further, to the extent that it's no longer recoverable.

How to Recover Data When Your Hard Drive Goes Belly Up

Pictured: A hard drive that experienced a head crash and made a deep scratch. This can render a drive unrecoverable.

If Your Drives Spins Ups and Is Detected by Your Computer, But Hangs When You Try to Access It

This usually means that the magnetic media is degraded. Basically, there are a large amount of bad sectors that the drive is trying to read, failing to do so, and hanging. This is a common problem that occurs over time and can be worked around, but only with professional data recovery equipment, more specifically a hard imager. If you look at the SMART values of the drive you'll notice and large amount of reallocated sectors to confirm your suspicions. If the data is important then send it off to the pros.

If you want to have a crack at it yourself (and risk making the problem worse or losing your data altogether) then you can try a software imager that can work around bad areas. Seeing that software commands ultimately goes through the BIOS, the effectiveness is limited. The best option if you want to go this route is a free Linux application called dd_rescue. It can skip bad areas and image in reverse.

If Your Drive Makes a Beeping Sound When You Power it Up

The beeping sounds you are hearing is the motor trying to spin the drive up and failing to do so. This is caused by one of two things, both serious mechanical failures. The most common is what's known as stiction. The heads of your drive park either in the center or on a ramp at the edge of the drive when not in use. Remember, the heads don't make contact with the data area of the platters, they fly just above. Sometimes, the heads can fail to park properly and the platters stop spinning with the heads still over the data area. Because of the extremely smooth surfaces of both the platters and heads, they literally stick to each other, hence the name stiction. The drive needs to be opened up in the lab, heads carefully removed and most likely replaced, definitely not a DIY job.

How to Recover Data When Your Hard Drive Goes Belly Up

Pictured: The head assembly with drive turned off and heads in the parked position. With stiction, they would be stuck somewhere on the platters.

The other cause could be seizure of the motor spindle. This is the spindle around which the platters rotate. It can become seized if the drive suffers a hard knock or drop. It's not a particularly common fault, except for Seagate drives as they have a particularly fragile spindle. There are two ways for this problem to be resolved, both of which require pro intervention. Either the spindle can be replaced or the platters are moved to a new hard drive casing along with heads, PCB, the works.

If Your Drive Sounds Normal but is Not Detected, or is Detected as the Wrong Capacity

This normally indicates a problem with some area of the firmware. Either it's not being read properly which could actually be head problem, or there is some corruption that needs to be resolved. A few years back there was a well-known bug with Seagate 7200.11 drives with firmware version SD15 known was the BSY bug. Googling this provide a wealth of info of the huge amount of failures were caused by this firmware glitch. There was a DIY solution for this particular problem, but with today's drives there is nothing that the end user can do but to send your drive in for professional help.

So, there are a few instances where you can attempt to recover your own data. If you've accidentally deleted your data then you might be in luck. If the drive is completely dead and won't even power up then you could go the DIY PCB route if you wish to tinker. Other than that, if your drive is making unusual noises or acting in a peculiar manner, you'll need to hand it over?together with some hard earned cash?to a data recovery professional. Remember, ANY attempts at data recovery are risky. If the data is important, take it directly to the professionals.

Amazon announces Coins, a virtual currency coming to the Kindle Fire in May

DNP Amazon Kindle Fire HD review 89inch, 4G LTE

Jeff Bezos, whose fortune is probably built upon real money, has decided to invent a fake one for his customers. Amazon is launching a virtual currency, called Amazon Coins, which is designed to encourage Kindle Fire users to buy apps, games and in-app item purchases. When it launches in May, Amazon plans to give away tens of millions of dollars worth of free coins to consumers, just to get 'em hooked -- before pulling the old switcheroo and demanding they stump up their hard-earned in order to be able to buy things from Farmville.
