These Are Some Of The Tools You Need For Doing Home Improvements

Before you start any home improvement project, you also have to choose the appropriate tools for the project. Sometimes our old tools will do the trick, but more times than not, new tools must be purchased for specific projects. Tools and equipment are necessary to do any type of home improvement project, especially on your own. Here are some proven tips on choosing the right tools for home-improvement undertaking.

Anyone that starts a home improvement project must consider all of the essentials before they begin. Screwdrivers are an essential part of any project like this, especially kits that come with different sizes and styles. Phillips and flat screwdrivers are standard with any kit that you purchase. Anyone that does a project like this should also have a claw hammer at their disposal. Another very useful tool to have is a pair of pliers. These can be used for a variety of reasons and come in different shapes and sizes. Slip joint pliers are probably the most useful all around variety you can get, as these can open to several different widths. If you have siding that you need to take off of the wall, or flooring that needs to be removed, a pry-bar is also a great tool to have.

Lighting is very important when doing jobs around the home. To need to make sure you have some kind of lighting when you are working in a dark space without power, but this shouldn't be an issue when you are working in a home with electricity. A reliable flashlight is a useful tool to have in many situations.

They come in various sizes, and it would be a good idea to have several different ones. For most jobs, you will need the use of your hands, so you will need a light, like the ones miners wear when they work, which is called a hands free headlamp. Anytime there isn't the proper lighting, such as dark stairways, the situation can become dangerous.

For more info construction leads

For many of the home repairs you will be doing, without a ladder you will never reach them. Pretty much any job done on the outside of your house will need a quality ladder, because you will be climbing up on a roof to repair shingles, or do exterior painting. For indoor tasks, you won't need to climb very high, so a stepladder will be all you need. An extension ladder that can be adjusted to different heights will be needed for many jobs. Ladders come with duty ratings, which tell you how much weight they can safely hold. Your needs in this area depend on how much you weigh, and what you may be carrying. Usually when you are climbing up a ladder, you will be carrying something, so figure that weight in also, when you are trying to determine what ladder you need. It is dangerous to have to stretch out to reach something, so make sure you have a ladder that is long enough.

As you can see, different tools and strategies must be used to properly complete your home improvement plan efficiently. Before your project begins, the research should be complete along with gathering the tools you will utilize. Catering to your own personal preferences, and to what you need to complete the job, get power tools (and manually operated ones) before you start. Having the most efficient tools can reduce the amount of time it takes and give you more impressive results.

On the Call: Ford CEO Alan Mulally

Ford Motor Co. reported its 13th consecutive quarterly profit Wednesday and beat Wall Street's earnings and revenue forecasts, prompting Standard and Poor's and others to reiterate their "buy" ratings on Ford shares. But the shares are languishing around $9, less than half their value at the beginning of 2011. On Wednesday, they hit a new 52-week low of $8.92.

That led an analyst to ask CEO Alan Mulally why Ford's shares aren't performing better during a conference call to discuss the company's second-quarter earnings.

QUESTION: "Your stocks sit in the $9 range here, it's a price level we haven't seen since December 2009, which is a year where I think Ford make l$0.01 of earnings per share ... As an industrialist and a business leader, what do you read into that? What do you think the market is missing about Ford here?"

MULALLY: "Well, I think it's in the context of a very tough business environment worldwide. I think people are starting to appreciate that we have a tremendous presence and operation in Europe. We have made money there over the last eight years, but are seeing this very significant deterioration in the economy and the industry. And so I think that's weighing on people's minds.

"I think it's more of the volatility of the world. I think people really do appreciate the value-creation potential going forward, by supporting the customers all around the world. Even during the toughest of times, we continue to restructure our operations to operate profitability at the lower demand, the current demand. And also, we are accelerating the investment in these new products around the world. So I think both the things are in play. I think the best thing we can do for value creation is to continue to implement the Ford plan of delivering a viable, exciting, profitably growing company, and I think that will be appreciated over time."

Put Down The Cornerstone Of An Effective Retirement Savings ...

When you start a job, you can easily assume that you are at some point going to retire. Retirement Plans are one of the only ways to get money when your working time is over; however some people do not believe retirement plans are necessary. Of course the first step is planning so that you can form a successful retirement plan. Much like anything in the real world, a structure is only as good as its base.

Time spent on the planning phase is time invested with benefits to be reaped later. Eventually a good plan will mean that analyzing is a thing of the past, but profit is the present and future. So spend quality time planning your retirement plan so that you are happy.

Discussed below are some nuggets of wisdom that can be instrumental as you start your journey of retirement savings. Retirement savings plan can have unexpected turning points, so make sure you read the below tips to be aware of such circumstances.

Make use of your employer sponsored scheme. These plans often have very good benefits that many people do not notice. The best part about choosing a plan like this is that whilst you donate a certain amount into your pension, the employer donates more. More often than not this amount is irrespective of wages and simply looks like free cash.

As mentioned at the investment funds uk website, you should only look to invest in reputable advisory structures. Whilst some may think that there is no need for professional advice, if you are not knowledgeable in the investing world every little bit of advice is going to help. Qualified investment advisors can be found in most financial institutions and offer great information. This information is useful and if harnessed can set the course for a good retirement saving plan.

If you are interested in both short-term and long-term investment plans, an advisor should be able to cater for both. You should use the ISA allowance site or similar, if you have difficulty finding a good investment expert to guide you. An example of such vehicles is structured insurance policies which in addition to taking care of your future can give you short-term benefits. Maximizing your return will also be something to talk about.

Know your risk appetite and invest in a plan that best suits you. Risk tolerance is different in each and every one of us. They are those that are risk averse while others are risk neutral and some risk takers. Before you take any retirement savings plan, know how it is going to fit into your profile and whether you can accommodate it or not. The only advise is to make sure you are comfortable with your investments.

Retirement planning therefore is as important as the funds that will be put in the plan. A mantra goes that ?failing to plan is planning to fail.? It is therefore paramount that the person considering a retirement savings plan thinks not only of the present but also should have a crystallized perspective of the future.

Young Breast Cancer Survivors Group Receives Final Investing In ...

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. ? The Young Survivors Group at the Women?s Center of Jacksonville will be able to continue to help young breast cancer survivors thanks to a recent $1,000 grant won through Community First Credit Union?s Investing in You contest. The grant will help secure a location for monthly meetings, provide educational materials and fund outreach efforts for the Young Survivors Group.

Bobbi de C?rdova-Hanks, founder of Bosom Buddies, a longtime support group for breast cancer survivors of all ages, said the Young Survivors Group emerged from the Bosom Buddies group about two years ago as they discovered a need for more age-specific discussions. The Young Survivors Group, created to assist breast cancer survivors between the ages of 18 and 45, was in danger of being disbanded due to lack of financial support until the organization won this grant.

?Breast cancer is an ongoing battle that presents young women with a unique set of issues to confront,? said Jennifer Lewis, a Young Survivors Group member who was diagnosed at age 38. ?The Young Survivors Group provides these women with a forum to share their experiences, treatment options and support with others in similar situations.?

The Young Survivors Group is the sixth winner to receive a grant through the Investing in You contest. The initiative, launched in April, invited community members to submit ideas to make the First Coast a better place. The credit union awarded $1,000 every two weeks for 90 days. Semi-finalists were chosen based on which ideas received the most ?likes,? with a panel selecting the winners that would receive grant funding from Community First.

The five previous winners include:

  • JumpingFish?? a nonprofit group advocating for First Coast waterways
  • Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary?- a big cat rescue in need of a new cabin and platforms for its five tiger cubs
  • Rethreaded?? an organization helping local victims of the sex trade industry restart their lives through a t-shirt recycling business
  • Camp Maddie?? a therapeutic camp that provides grief recovery and support services to children affected by homicide
  • The S.T.A.R. Group?? a new support group for parents with autistic children

?

?We received more than double the community improvement ideas than last year?s Investing in You contest,? said CEO of Community First Credit Union John Hirabayashi. ?It?s an overwhelming experience for us as a credit union to see our community band together for collaborative improvement.?

Learn more about these winners and their ideas on the Community First Facebook page orwww.InvestingInYouContest.com.

12 Tips for Gently Parenting Your Adult Children (Hint: It starts when ...

?Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood.? ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

As a mother of six?from 25 years old all the way down to 25 months old, three of whom are adults, two of them married, one?with two small children, three with college degrees, one?a Pastor, one?a Family Therapist, one a senior pre-med student, two who are teenagers, two currently homeschooled, one a kindergartener, and one a diaper-bottomed nursing toddler, my ?boots on the ground? parenting experience is not only wide-ranged, but also very current for nearly every stage of parenting possible.

I have also studied developmental and educational psychology, have more than two decades of training and experience in leading and developing student and children?s ministries, have created curriculums for both home education and church-based learning centers, have trained in, worked in, and directed early childhood education programs, worked with high-risk youth as a leader and mentor, and have extensive experience as a parenting author, speaker, and coach.

None of those things, however, make it okay for me to over-step my boundaries as a parent of adult children who are just embarking on their careers, just beginning to make their mark on the world, just establishing their own families.

So, what are my boundaries? That, friends, is the 64,000 dollar question.

All stages of parenting come with their own unique learning curve, their own challenges and frustrations, their own compromises and sacrifices, and their own flubs, false steps, and failures. From those first terror-stricken days with a newborn to the sleep-deprived months of infancy to the challenges of toddlerhood and beyond, parenting is a journey, not a destination. And when subsequent little ones arrive, the journey starts all over again as we discover that the lessons learned from parenting one child don?t always apply to the next as each have their own incomparable personalities, quirks, and individual identities.

The principles of gentle parenting (i.e. connection, empathy, intentionality, respect) don?t change as our children grow, just as they don?t change from one child to the next. What does change is our understanding of those principles as we grow in wisdom and experience as parents and human beings. The practical application of gentle parenting principles, though, can look very different from child to child and life stage to life stage. For instance, with an introverted child gentle parenting might involve a greater degree of physical proximity and emotional support whereas with a very extroverted child it may involve a greater degree of energy direction and respectful guidance.

This constancy of principles and individualized application of gentle parenting is no less true when parenting our adult children than it is when parenting our minor children. As gentle parents, we are our children?s first and best friend in the purest and truest definition of friendship. That sets the stage for the transition from the early parent/friend years to the parent-friendship that will characterize our relationship when our children grow into adulthood.

Here are 12 practical tips for gently parenting your adult children:

1.)??? Begin to consciously pay attention to your own parents? interactions with you. Mentally catalogue what you find helpful and what you find intrusive, what is an acceptable level of involvement, advice, and interaction and what feels overbearing or lacking. Make a mental (or actual!) note to remember those feelings when your own children become adults.

2.)??? Remember, parenting is literally ?on the job? learning. Your parents are discovering by trial and error (often lots of error) what their roles and boundaries are in this uncharted territory of parenting adults. Model giving your parents grace when they overstep or underplay their roles. This will set the stage for your children to extend the same grace to you when seemingly overnight you suddenly find yourself learning to parent your own adult children.

3.)??? While your child is an infant, meet their needs swiftly, consistently, and gently. They won?t remember what you did or didn?t do at this stage, but they will always carry with them how it made them feel. Make sure what they feel is safe, secure, and loved so that is they will take with them into adulthood.

4.)??? When your child reaches toddlerhood, focus on connection rather than correction. What will matter most in later years won?t be whether they wore matching shoes or left the park without pitching a fit. What will matter is whether they felt heard, understood, and respected.

5.)??? As your child moves into the preschool and early childhood years, focus on communication, whether that takes the form of whining, tattling, endless questions or some combination of all three. Continue to build a trust relationship by hearing their heart rather than their tone and responding with gentle guidance.

6.)??? When your child reaches the middle stages of childhood, listening to the endless stories from your chatterbox or offering empathy and quiet support to your dreamer will help them as they explore who they are and who they want to be when they grow up. You are building the friendship of a lifetime in these interactions, so make them a priority!

7.)??? Once your child enters the teen years, consciously begin to gradually shift your role into a supporting rather than a leading act. Listen not to their words, their attitudes, their hormones, their angst. Listen instead to their struggles, their hopes, their dreams, their fears. Remember, you are the only adult in the relationship at this point. They still have a lot of maturing to do. Practice self-control. Be honest about your own struggles, fears, and failings. You?ll be amazed at what a connection point that is as your teen discovers that they aren?t alone in their humanness. Be the first one to listen, the first one to forgive, the first one to apologize, the first one to understand, the first one to back down and try to find another way when the going gets tough.

8.)??? When your child becomes an adult, let them set the pace. Some children will hit eighteen and be ready to move into a university dorm or get a job and an apartment right away. Others will need a slower transition. They may need to stay at home while going to university or while taking some time to try out different jobs as they explore this strange new world of adulthood. If the time comes that you feel they need a gentle nudge out of the nest, you can help them to find an acceptable roommate or two and guide them through the process of settling into independent adulthood.

9.)??? Once your child is out on their own, your role will shift fully to a support system. Offering unsolicited advice is fine as long as it is briefly stated?once. After that, it becomes intrusive. Offers of help and invitations to family events, etc. should follow the same guidelines.

10.)??? When your child starts a family of their own, consciously bring to mind how you felt at various times when your own parents supported you in your new role and/or interfered with the establishment of your new little family. Acknowledge to yourself and to them that they won?t do everything the way you did, that they will make decisions you wouldn?t make, that you will offer advice that won?t be heeded, and that they will make mistakes and have to learn from them just like you did.

11.)??? On the subject of making mistakes, remember, just as you wouldn?t want every youthful mistake, every wrong choice, every unfortunate decision to be broadcast to the world or even just joked about privately instead of being left in the past where it belongs,?be sure to practice ?The Golden Rule of Parenting? and treat your children how you like to be treated.

12.)??? Keep in mind that the person you are now isn?t the person you were when you first started out on your journey into adulthood. Expecting your young adult children to think and experience and process life and events the way that you do now is like expecting a newborn baby to be able to pick up a book and read it.

Remember, the voice of experience has an immense amount of wisdom to offer, but only if it also has the wisdom to know when to remain silent. ~L.R.Knost

Quarshie suffering from Parkinson's not lung cancer

Ex-Ghana captain Emmanuel Quarshie has developed early stages of Parkinson's disease, a shock medical report in Egypt has been revealed to MTNFootball.com.

The former Zamalek player arrived in Cairo on Tuesday, at the invitation of the club's president Mamdouh Abass, to undergo treatment for what he thought was lung cancer.

But doctors have in the Egyptian capital have revealed that the former national star's ailment is far from what was originally thought to be affecting him.

He underwent tests at a Cairo hospital on Wednesday which revealed the severity of his illness but doctors in one of the top hospitals in Egypt say they will offer him effective treatment.

"Quarshie showed the early signs of Parkinson's disease and not lung cancer,? a top Zamalek official told MTNFootball.com on condition of anonymity.

"The doctors say it is possible for him to respond to treatment in the coming days, which will make him recover from the illness."

Quarshie was living in Ghana thinking he was suffering from lung cancer until Zamalek arrived in the country to play Berekum Chelsea in the Champions League.

Zamalek chief Abass worried over the plight of the player, who helped them to win several titles including the Champions League, paid for the midfielder to travel to Egypt for effective treatment.

Quarshie was the captain of Ghana's national team that won their last Nations Cup title in 1982.

Samsung camera lets you take self-shots with a gesture

9 hrs.

Samsung has introduced a new point-and-shoot camera called the MV900F that features a flip-up screen and the ability to zoom or capture shots by waving your hands around. It also has Wi-Fi built in so you can share from the camera directly to sites like Facebook and YouTube.

As phone cameras continue to overtake the once-ubiquitous digital point-and-shoot, companies like Samsung are always looking for new features to differentiate their devices. The latest innovation from Samsung is a touchscreen that flips up 180 degrees for easy framing of self-portraits. It's certainly a better solution than their ill-fated DualView cameras, which had a tiny secondary screen next to the lens.

The new MV900F also allows you to control the camera by moving your hands in certain ways: in a circle to control zoom, and up and down to fire the shutter (presumably after a short countdown).

It takes 16-megapixel pictures and 1080p video using a 5x zoom lens with an F/2.5 maximum aperture, meaning it can capture quite a bit of light in darker situations.

The camera should be available in August for $350.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC News. His personal website is coldewey.cc.

Family's Home and Business Lost after Downtown Alma Fire ...

An Alma family is homeless after Leta?s Furniture and Antiques on Fayetteville Avenue in downtown Alma caught fire Tuesday night.

The Alma Fire Department received the call about the fire between 9:30 and 9:45 Tuesday night. Police blocked of downtown streets as crews worked to put out the fire.

Firefighters put out the flames and left the scene around 4 a.m. Wednesday, according to the fire chief. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

The Alma 7th Day Adventist Church and Hudson?s gym located next to the antique shop both sustained smoke and water damage. The church moved Wednesday night?s bible study to a member?s house.

The gym?s owner expects people to work out Wednesday evening.

The owner of the antique shop, Michael Cruse, moved into the building 14 years ago and lived in the shop with his wife. He says he was downstairs with is family when the fire sparked. When the couple saw the flames they say they rushed out with their granddaughter.

The Cruse family closed the antique store about six years ago. They say they had hoped to open the business back up. Firefighters say the building is a total loss.

The couple says they only had liability insurance, and despite their loss they say they?re glad they made it out alright.

Leta Cruse and her husband moved into an RV. ?We can always start over,? she said.

Uptown Girl Consignment and Boutique was closed Wednesday because of smoke damage, according to the owner Vickie Dickinson. ?I just have a lot of stuff that just a washing machine and a dryer just isn?t going to get the smell out,? she said.

Dickinson is not sure what is next. She said, ?I don?t know if I?m going to be able to reopen.?

Wired Science: Google Experiments With 5 New Web Connected Installations In London

Web Lab_ OrchestraThis isn't quite on the same level as Google's Project Glass experiment, but Google today launched a set of five physical installations housed in London's Science Museum. These installations, which users anywhere can control remotely, are meant to "inspire people around the world by showcasing the making that the Internet makes possible." While Google doesn't mention this explicitly in its post, chances are that the launch of this exhibition was timed to coincide with the Olympics in London.

Super+Bowl+XLIII+1Ef3coWxMpalGetty Images

Winning a Super Bowl not only will complete receiver Larry Fitzgerald?s career, but it also will distinguish him from the growing throng of big-numbers-no-titles wideouts who can?t get in to Canton without paying the admission fee.

And so, as the Cardinals prepare to face the Saints on August 5 at Fawcett Stadium, Fitzgerald will get a little extra incentive for his attempt to return at least five years after he calls it quits.

In an interview with the Hall of Fame?s website, Fitzgerald addresses the fact that two former Pitt Panthers will be inducted the day before the game: ?Curtis Martin and Chris Doleman.

And Fitzgerald even breaks out some Pitt trivia along the way.

?Though my career at Pitt lasted only two seasons, the experience left me with strong positive feelings about the city, the university, the coaches, my teammates and the great people of Pittsburgh,? Fitzgerald says, even though a loss to the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII may have dimmed his view of the ?Burgh, just a bit. ??It was an enjoyable time in my life, and I sometimes reflect on the football program?s longstanding success. ?Our eight Hall of Famers covered every decade from the 1950s right through to the turn of the century, showing remarkable consistency. And, let?s not forget that?Joe Stydahar, a 1930s and ?40 Hall of Fame lineman, originally played for Pitt before transferring to our hated archrival, West Virginia. ?His Hall of Fame honor makes nine for Pitt, with an asterisk!?

Technically, Stydahar never played for Pitt, which is why Pitt doesn?t get credit for a ninth Hall of Famer. ?Whether Fitzgerald becomes the ninth is the bigger question.

?Every practice, every play, every series, every game of every season I?m in a chase of the pursuit of greatness,? Fitzgerald says. ??The standard has been set by the likes of?Don Hutson,?Lance Alworth,?Charley Taylor,?Jerry Rice?and?Michael Irvin. So, I just try and stay healthy, focused, productive and humble and reach for greater heights ? getting back to and winning the Super Bowl.?

If that happens, he?ll be joining the other all-time great receivers in the Hall of Fame. ?He still may make it without a championship, but it would be easier to get a bronze bust if he can flash a diamond ring.
